about

Matt Sowell is both a "Mensch" and a splendid musician. He is a gentle giant who has his head screwed on right and proper. He is a fellow traveler, and his work embodied here illustrates that nicely!

"Organize or Die" is flat out wonderful! It is balanced, and masterful work that is accessible, and lovely to the ears! I was a bit surprised at the wide range of stylings and textures Matt incorporated into this collection. The music is mostly huge, and readily sonorous, anchored in rich sounds of Matt's wonderful guitars.

It is a textural portrait of "Joy and Wonder," coupled with reflections on the darker textures of our human condition. I am not suggesting that any of Matt's music is disturbing, rather it posses a bit of the same melancholia which is woven into the tapestry of human life. During the "Classical Period" pieces such as these were presented as Requiems, Fuges, Cantatas, and Concertos. (The "Schadenfreuden" to which I speak is illustrated in workds such as Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," J.S. Bach's "Tocacata and Fugue in D Minor," and Verdi's "Dies Irae"/Day of Wrath" which are all splendid examples of darker music.)

John Fahey's influence can be readily seen, along with a varied mix of other notable musicians including scions of Punk Rock, reflected in some of the works of the late, great Jack Rose who evolved from a Punk Rock" to become a leader in the "American Primitive Guitar" movement.

"Living the Dream", and "Hoppin' on a Leg" were of particular interest as they reflect the artistry of many of the early blues players, in particular, Frank Hutchison (who played a part of my own musical education as well as Fahey's.)
